The Many Benefits of Regular Exercise
We are told the importance of exercise, but often the
many benefits of regular exercise are overlooked. The United States Department of Health and Human Services
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports not only emphasizes the importance
of exercise, but the many benefits that are gained from regular exercise.
Commitment and finding an exercise routine that can be continued on
a regular basis is key to gaining maximum benefits from your health and
fitness plan.
Regular exercise reduces your overall risk for
developing many health related conditions.
For those who are just beginning, it might be difficult to start a
daily routine of exercise. It
is important to remember that some exercise is always better than no
exercise. Once you begin a fitness routine, however, the benefits
gained increase according to your continued commitment and duration of
exercise. You can increase
your results gained through exercise by exercising longer, exercising with
increasing intensity, or by exercising more frequently.
When it comes to beginning a new exercise plan, many
feel unsure regarding the amount of exercise required to see results.
The Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recommends that an
individual exercise for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes per week to see
benefits. This includes
exercising at moderate intensity level and can include activities such as
walking, swimming, or aerobics as well as strength training exercises.
Exercise is beneficial for everyone, regardless
of age, weight, or gender. Exercise
is also important for people who have disabilities, and is far more
advantageous than living a sedentary lifestyle. Those with chronic
conditions, illnesses or other conditions can exercise safely, however,
you must ensure that you are exercising within your abilities and under
the recommendation and approval of your physician.
Before beginning a new exercise program, speak with your health
care professional and ensure that the exercises you select are appropriate
for your lifestyle as well as health.
